Why add visual discomfort to the exertion of physical exercise? Pilates is an art of controlled bodily movements and it stands to reason that glare from a light source would detract from the mind’s ability to focus on the what the body is doing.
Given practitioners spend a lot of time on their backs, looking upwards, we designed a ceiling suspend lighting system that keeps discomfort glare to a minimum.
Departing from the regular downwards orientation of the 5575 linear diffusion system, we flipped the emitting surface so that all light is reflected off the white ceiling surface.
The client pointed out the use of fans in the space, powerful enough to cause the pendants to sway if suspended in the regular fashion by braided steel cables. For this reason we used 6mm threaded rod, spinning freely at the fitting, attached to threaded inserts embedded in the concrete ceiling.
The over-all result is a visually commanding, but clean and simple area lighting solution. The client commented that they have lost count of the compliments received on this aspect of the fit out. This made us happy.
